White Snail

In het neonverlichte Minsk ontwikkelt zich een voorzichtige liefdesgeschiedenis tussen twee buitenbeentjes. Masha is een Belarussisch model dat droomt van een carrière in China en geobsedeerd is door uiterlijke perfectie en escapisme. Misha werkt ’s nachts in een mortuarium en probeert overdag zijn eenzaamheid en innerlijke onrust vorm te geven als schilder. Wanneer hun paden elkaar kruisen, ontstaat er een terughoudende vriendschap, die uitgroeit tot een diepere band waardoor zowel Masha als Misha hun vaste ideeën over schoonheid, het lichaam en hun eigen plaats in de wereld moeten heroverwegen. De hoofdrolspelers uit White Snail zijn allebei geen professionele acteurs. Marya Imbro (Masha) is in het dagelijks leven model en Mikhail Senkov (Misha) is een kunstenaar die ook in een mortuarium werkte. Daardoor is White Snail bijna een docudrama. De witte slak van de titel staat symbool voor iets kwetsbaars, traags en bijna transparants, maar ook iets dat zijn huis (zijn verleden) altijd met zich meedraagt. Uiteindelijk gaat deze film niet alleen over liefde, maar over overleven in een wereld waarin twee mensen die elkaar vinden zich allebei verloren voelen. White Snail ging in première op het filmfestival van Locarno en won daar een speciale juryprijs en de prijs voor beste acteerprestaties voor Marya Imbro én Mikhail Senkov. * * * In neon-lit Minsk, a tentative love story unfolds between two outsiders. When their paths cross, a tentative friendship develops, which grows into a deeper bond, forcing both Masha and Misha to reconsider their fixed ideas about beauty, the body and their own place in the world. The lead actors in White Snail are neither professional actors. Marya Imbro (Masha) is a model in real life and Mikhail Senkov (Misha) is an artist who also worked in a mortuary. As a result, White Snail is almost a docudrama. The white snail of the title symbolises something fragile, slow and almost transparent, but also something that always carries its home (its past) with it. Ultimately, this film is not just about love, but about survival in a world where two people who find each other both feel lost. White Snail premiered at the Locarno Film Festival, where it won a special jury prize and the award for best acting performances for both Marya Imbro and Mikhail Senkov.
