De documentaire is zowel leerzaam als confronterend. In de beelden en interviews voel je de pijn en de worstelingen van de Javaanse diasporagemeenschap, vooral wanneer het gaat om de inspanningen om culturele tradities levend te houden in de huidige samenleving. Dit alles staat onmiskenbaar in het licht van de geschiedenis van de Nederlandse kolonisatie. In 2023 was het 150 jaar geleden dat de slavernij in Suriname werd afgeschaft. More Than Kling Klang Klong; The Sounds of Survival is daarom een aanrader voor iedereen die geïnteresseerd is in de Surinaams‑Javaanse (muzikale) cultuur en in andere verhalen over de Nederlandse koloniale geschiedenis en slavernij. De instrumenten van het Bangun Tresna Budaya‑orkest zijn sinds eind jaren ’70 in het bezit van Rukun Budi Utama (RBU). Het verhaal over hoe deze instrumenten daar terechtkwamen was onbekend, en dus lag er een duidelijke opdracht: achterhaal de herkomst van de instrumenten en documenteer dit voor toekomstige generaties. Regisseur Jeffrey Salimin (Docu125) ging de uitdaging aan, maar merkte al tijdens de eerste interviews dat de thema’s veel groter waren dan alleen deze groep. Zo werd de Surinaams‑Javaanse gamelan in 2021 opgenomen in de Inventaris Immaterieel Erfgoed Nederland. Daarom vertelt de film ook het bredere verhaal van de Surinaams‑Javaanse gamelan. De Surinaams‑Javaanse variant van de gamelan ontstond tijdens de periode van Nederlandse kolonisatie in Suriname. Op indringende wijze laat de documentaire zien hoe de instrumenten met de hand werden gemaakt en welke uitdagingen er zijn om deze gamelantraditie te behouden. Aan de hand van persoonlijke archieven en interviews met (voormalige) spelers van het gamelanorkest Bangun Tresna Budaya leer je over hun motivatie om deze culturele uiting te koesteren en levend te houden. ------------------- The documentary is very educational and confronting.
