Paolo (Edoardo Leo) is pas veertig wanneer hij beseft dat hij lijdt aan vroege Alzheimer. Met de liefdevolle steun van zijn vrouw Michela (Teresa Saponangelo) begint hij de moeilijke veranderingen die deze ziekte met zich meebrengt onder ogen te zien. Maar voor Paolo is het grootste obstakel om het aan zijn elfjarige zoon Mattia (Javier Francesco Leoni) te vertellen. Zo begint een vreugdevolle maar pijnlijke reis om met zijn zoon in het reine te komen, wat ertoe zal leiden dat ze zich allemaal bewust worden van die aandoening, terwijl de liefde die hen verenigt nieuwe, waardevolle herinneringen creëert. Per te is geïnspireerd op het leven van Mattia Piccoli, die als 11 jarige werd benoemd tot Alfiere della Repubblica door de Italiaanse president Sergio Mattarella vanwege de liefde en zorg die hij aan zijn vader gaf terwijl die aan een vroege vorm van Alzheimer leed. Ondanks het zware onderwerp koos regisseur Alessandro Aronadio ervoor om dit verhaal met licht, poëtisch en hoopvol te vertellen — met humor en alledaagse momenten, die de liefde binnen het gezin benadrukken en niet alleen de pijn tonen. * * * Paolo (Edoardo Leo) is only forty when he realises he is suffering from early-onset Alzheimer’s. Thus begins a joyful yet painful journey to come to terms with his son, which will lead them all to become aware of the condition, whilst the love that unites them creates new, precious memories. Per te is inspired by the life of Mattia Piccoli, who, at the age of 11, was named Alfiere della Repubblica by Italian President Sergio Mattarella for the love and care he showed his father whilst he was suffering from early-onset Alzheimer’s. Despite the heavy subject matter, director Alessandro Aronadio chose to tell this story in a light, poetic and hopeful way — with humour and everyday moments that emphasise the love within the family rather than merely showing the pain.
