Dead Man's Wire

Indianapolis, 1977. Vanwege een zakelijk conflict is Tony Kiritsis (Bill Skarsgård) de wanhoop nabij. Ten einde raad gijzelt hij hypotheekmakelaar Richard Hall (Dacre Montgomery) met een shotgun, die met een draad aan zijn eigen nek is bevestigd. Een zogenaamde ‘dead man’s wire’: als iemand Tony probeert te stoppen of hem neerschiet, gaat de shotgun automatisch af en wordt de gijzelaar gedood. Terwijl politie en media toekijken, ontstaat een urenlange gespannen patstelling waarin Kiritsis zijn frustraties over schulden, vastgoedfraude en het systeem uit. Dead Man's Wire is gebaseerd op een waargebeurd verhaal, dat overeenkomsten vertoont met de klassieker Dog Day Afternoon (ook met Al Pacino). Ook in die film groeit een gijzeling door een wanhopige man uit tot een mediaspektakel. Tijdens de gijzeling liet Kiritsis zijn slachtoffer soms pizza bestellen en tv kijken, een vreemde mix van dreiging en alledaagse momenten. Dat het 50 jaar duurde voordat dit verhaal werd verfilmd, heeft te maken met het feit dat Dog Day Afternoon al een enorme hit was toen het gebeurde. Producenten waren bang dat een nieuwe gijzelingsfilm te veel op een kopie zou lijken. * * * Indianapolis, 1977. Due to a business dispute, Tony Kiritsis (Bill Skarsgård) is on the verge of despair. At his wits’ end, he takes mortgage broker Richard Hall (Dacre Montgomery) hostage, holding a shotgun to his head, which is attached to his own neck by a wire. A so-called ‘dead man’s wire’: if anyone tries to stop Tony or shoots him, the shotgun fires automatically and the hostage is killed. Whilst the police and media look on, a tense standoff lasting several hours ensues, during which Kiritsis vents his frustrations about debt, property fraud and the system. Dead Man’s Wire is based on a true story, which bears similarities to the classic Dog Day Afternoon (also starring Al Pacino). In that film, too, a hostage-taking by a desperate man escalates into a media spectacle. During the hostage situation, Kiritsis sometimes let his victim order pizza and watch TV, a strange mix of menace and everyday moments. The fact that it took 50 years for this story to be made into a film is down to the fact that Dog Day Afternoon was already a massive hit when it happened. Producers were afraid that a new hostage film would look too much like a copy.
